John Whelan, US
Connecticut based button box player John Whelan was born in the predominantly Irish community of Dunstable, England. John was already winning awards by the age of 14, but it was when he moved to America in 1980 that things really took off. Working with fiddler Eileen Ivers, the duo soon became a major force in the new American Irish music scene, with a string of critically acclaimed recordings and concerts together. John was a moving force behind the trad-to-rock band Kips Bay (with guitarist/songwriter Pat Kilbride). He now tours with The John Whelan Band around the globe, doing the old songs in new ways. - CF
