Quintet Bumbac
Miroirs
(Release date March 27, 2020)
I am pleased to present Quintet Bumbac as our artist of the month in RootsWorld. Led by musician/composer David Brossier, this string quintet explores the roots of music from the Balkans and beyond, and reimagines them as new music, in homage to but not constrained by the tradition. You will hear the straight ahead sounds Romanian tarafs or old Greek melodies, they are turned to wards new ways of hearing them, wrapped in the classical structure of a string ensemble, but also wild and creative as the composer puts his own soul into them. - CF
The artists write:
Quintet Bumbac is a new vibration in Balkan melodies, transmitted through the pen and the sensitivity of David Brossier. His compositions are inspired by the authentic sound of Romanian tarafs, popular ensembles from Bulgaria, Greece and even Turkey as the raw material for research and experimentation. The five stringed instruments mix their timbres in transcendent loops, build up rhythmic mosaics, dissect their threads to come together as one. The contours of traditional music are revisited to make room for the deep soul of the violin and its endless tones.
David Brossier: Compositions, arrangements, violon d’amour
Ariane Cohen-Adad: Violin, Viola
Christian Fromentin: Violin
Léonore Grollemund: Cello
Anita Pardo: Double bass
