Our Music of the Month selection for December 2021 Petrona Martinez Ancestras
"With Ancestras, Martínez pays vivid homage to her own culturally vital matriarchal lineage; to the women of the transatlantic African Diaspora more broadly; and to her artistic compatriots, whom she affectionately refers to as petronistas." - Michael Stone in his RootsWorld review
Legendary Afro-Colombian singer Petrona Martínez crosses borders as she collaborates with 14 women of the African diaspora—including Angelique Kidjo, Susana Baca, and Aymée Nuviola - on Ancestras. She places the bullerengue tradition she inherited from her ancestresses in dialogue with many genres (afrobeat, jazz, mariachi, rumba, timba, Dominican salve, etc.), and languages of the global south (Fon, Garífuna, Palenquero, Wayu, Bahian Portuguese, etc.) She is joined on this journey with a host of women from around the world: Susana Baca (Perú), Nidia Góngora (Timbiquí), Angelique Kidjo (Benin, África), Aymée Nuviola (Cuba), Flor de Toloache (New York, USA), Xênia França (Brasil), Enerolisa Nuñez (República Dominicana), Neta (Honduras), Yomira John (Panamá), Eryen Korath (Buenaventura, Colombia), Brianna Thomas (New York, USA), Anggie Bryan (San Andrés, Colombia), Mónica Carrillo (Perú), Mai Elka Prado (Panamá).
Ancestras privileges us with music and voice as a politics of expression, preservation, and dissemination of thought, a gift from the octogenarian matriarch to the women and men of the world.
