Our Music of the Month selection for January 2022 Maria Moramarco Stella Aričnte
Always engaged in the work of recovering and re-proposing oral tradition music, Maria Moramarco interprets a lesser-known repertoire from the Upper Murgia of Bari. It's an evocative journey through the dialectic of religious song.
Stella Aričnte is a pilgrimage, expressing pathos, devotion and faith. On the way to the sanctuary, the song is a prayer and dramatic invocation for the return of one's brother from the war or for the recovery from a terrible illness, the song is an expression of the ritual of thanksgiving for the victory over opposing forces, for the grace received, while barefoot, with dishevelled hair and a crawling tongue, one goes towards the altar.
"Yes, it's strongly religious, but the manner of it all transcends church and services to find a spiritual core. And the praise for that lies with Maria Moramarco herself. This is her project, her vision, and she's shepherded it into the light with love and passion." Chris Nickson in his RootsWorld review
