RootsWorld's Music of the Month for June, 2017
Ahmad Al Khatib - Oud The artists say: "If Arabic music is a tree with many branches, then one of those branches is Sabl. This time the oud-percussion duo formed by Ahmad Al Khatib and Youssef Hbeisch are joined by two guests, who accompany them, on the double bass and the buzuq, for this most effervescent of projects. Indeed, Zabad means effervescence, the foam of nights, with music that is at times contemplative, at times exhilarating; both composition and technique draw on tradition to create innovation, with the fearless curiosity of one who surrenders to the rhythms of the world." Tyran Grillo writes in his RootsWorld review, Oud and buzuq converse beautifully in two improvised "preludes," featuring only those two instruments. Like the album's title track (Arabic for "foam"), they seem effervescent in name, but in execution flirt with undeniable providence. Percussion and bass, as a dedicated rhythm section, keep step with the duo, ever in search of humanity. This is explicitly optimistic music that will throw a light on your heart, no mattered how shaded it has become.
