Dominguinhos, Sivuca & Oswaldinho
Cada Um Belesco Um Pouco is the second full-length recording by three generations of accordion masters. Each is a fixture in the Brazilian music scene in his own right, having performed with artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Miriam Makeba, Chico Buarque and Carmlia Alves. Together they produce a lively, uncluttered sound that makes it seem as if they have been playing together for years, despite the fact that they last met in a recording studio ten years before this session. The pieces, many penned by the artists or by the late Luiz Gonzaga, are surprisingly diverse in both style and tone, primarily consisting of forr, xote and assasta p. The title, loosely translated as Each One Pinches a Little, gives an indication of what to expect: playfulness seasoned with a sometimes unexpected piquancy. The artists take obvious pleasure in surprising the listener, as with the giddy cascade of notes and the arpeggios of accordion bass notes peppered throughout the title track, or "Asa Branca," whose uncharacteristically wistful intro segues into a joyful dance number. Likewise, the excellent quintet of backing musicians provide sly, rhythmically supple accompaniment. Altogether, the CD presents the state of the art in contemporary Brazilian accordion music, and provides an ample introduction to the rich musical heritage of Northeastern Brazil. - Michael Duke
